Damascus steel
The terms Damascus steel, damascus or pattern welded mean composite steel forged from two or more different types of steel. It was named after its birthplace, the Syrian city of Damascus, a former stronghold of patterned steel production. As a common practice, harder high carbon steel and milder low carbon steel are repeatedly forging welded and bent together. High carbon steel provides greater hardness, better hardenability and longer edge retention, while milder steel provides greater blade flexibility and tensile strength. This process, which originated at a time when steel quality was often low and inconsistent, allows the positive properties of different types of steel to be combined. In addition, the different shadings created by the different carbon content in the alternating layers create incredibly beautiful patterns. Undoubtedly, these unusual patterns partly explain why inherent magical properties were attributed to Damascus steel blades in the Middle Ages.
