Description

Roman Pompeii Gladius with scabbard
This is a reproduction of a typical gladius, the original was found in the ruins of Pompeii. The gladius was the primary weapon of the Roman legions, and was used in many variations from the 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD. The Pompeii-type gladius is one of the versions of the Roman short sword. It is named by modern historians after the Italian archaeological site where four canonical examples have been found (dated before 79 AD, the year of the devastating volcanic eruption of Vesuvius that buried the city under several meters of ash).

The shorter and wider double-edged blade of the Pompeian gladius facilitated close-quarters combat. With straight, parallel cutting edges and a triangular tip, these gladiators were primarily designed as thrusting/piercing weapons, but they could still be quite effective at cutting or slashing.

The blade is forged from carbon steel. The apple and the guard are carved and turned from wood. The handle is made of real bone. Includes beautiful wooden scabbard with burgundy leather and brass trim.
