The sword of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa (Redbeard) has a blade of hardened steel, decorated with engravings on its upper part. The handle is made of bronze-gilded cast metal with short, straight quillons, decorated with relief figures, while the nut is in the form of two kneeling knights. The holder is wrapped in black leather and metal stripes.
