The Templar Order was founded in 1118. to ensure the protection of the holy places and protect the pilgrimage routes. The order reached its greatest splendor in the XIII century. The Templars considered themselves knights of God, the honor of the church and Christianity. It was a very well organized military force and they were the striking force in all the Crusades. They were in the vanguard in the attack, and in the rear in the retreat. Over the centuries they ensured the efficient government of the Latin kingdom of Constantinople. They didn't pay taxes or tribute, they just obeyed the pope and had possessions all over Europe and the Middle East.
