German officer saber with lion's head and steel scabbard
German military saber - also known as the lion's head saber due to the special shape of the handle.
Military sabers with a lion's head were usually part of the clothing of Prussian and German officers. They existed in many variants and were still worn by the higher ranks of the German army in both world wars.
This saber is based on the design of the ceremonial sabers worn by German officers with their ceremonial uniforms in World War II.
The thin, slightly curved EN45 spring steel blade is unsharpened and has approx. 54 cm long fuller. The blunt edge is about 1 mm thick, and the entire tip of the blade is attached to the handle.
The hilt consists of an apple cap hilt and a combined cross guard and knuckle. The apple is in the shape of a lion's head with two carved ruby-colored eyes, and the back strap as well as the collar of the handle have complex floral motifs. An artfully ornamented stirrup-shaped hinged bow emerging from the lion's mouth flows seamlessly into an equally ornate killon with rounded, richly ornamented langets and a downward-curving lion's head finial. The core of the handle is made of wood and wrapped in leather and brass wire. The bow, lion head cap with strap, collar and guard with langets are made of brass.
The military sword is supplied with a matching nickel-plated steel scabbard with two carrying straps, hinged suspension rings and a metal shoe.
And besides being a collector's item, it is also perfectly suitable as a prop, i.e. for theatrical performances.
