Description

Crusader helmet 13th century.

This beautiful high medieval pottery helmet is a reproduction of the so called closed helmet worn by the Crusaders / Templars in the late 12th and early 13th centuries.
This reconstruction of the Templar helmet, as worn by knights during the Crusades, was inspired by various historical sources such as the miniature from the illuminated Westminster Psalter (c. 1200-1250, British Library, Royal MS 2 A XXII, f. 220). It is made of 1.6 mm thick steel and decorated with a brass cross and crown. All the components of the knight's helmet are connected with steel rivets. The slits for the eyes are approx. 8 cm long, 0.7 to 1.8 cm wide and ten large vertical cutouts on the lower half of the helmet ensure proper ventilation.
The interior is blacked out and equipped with adjustable riveted leather suspension. The 2 mm thick brown leather chin strap closes with an antique brass buckle.
