Description

Medieval one-handed sword, steel

This handsome sword has a double-edged blade made of high carbon steel with a full point and unsharpened edges. The handle has a traditional wire-wrapped hilt. The crossguard is slightly curved towards the blade.

The one-handed weapon sword appeared on the scene around the 10th century and enjoyed great popularity among members of the fighting nobility in the High and Late Middle Ages. It developed from the Viking sword, which in turn developed from the spathe. While the High Medieval weapon sword had a longer hilt than its Early Medieval predecessor, the blade was somewhat narrower and more tapered at the tip.

The high and late medieval one-handed sword with a straight blade is also commonly called a knight's sword. Numerous historical illustrations of medieval knights holding one hand and a shield or shield, for example miniatures from the Codex Manesse or the Sachsenspiegel, show how appropriate this designation is.

The one-handed sword was the close combat weapon of choice for medieval knights and could be used for cutting or thrusting, depending on the design. Until about the mid-14th century, it usually had a wider blade with sharper edges and was primarily intended as a cutting weapon capable of dealing with the light protection of chain mail. But the introduction of plate armor led to the development of more tapered, sharply pointed blades that favored thrusting. One-handed swords were also used on horseback, for example when a warrior's polearm was broken or lost in battle or was too unwieldy for close-quarters situations.

This sword is designed as a collector's or decorative/display piece and, apart from being a collector's item, it is also perfectly suited as a prop, e.g. to complete your costume.
