The Shashka originated in the mountain tribes of the Caucasus in the 12th and 13th centuries. These formidable warriors were unmatched on horseback, and the shashka was crucial to their tactics. In the Russian Empire, the shashka was the weapon of choice for the Cossacks. This fiercely democratic warrior people were the most sought-after mercenaries in Eastern Europe.
