The story of the 47 Ronin is one of the most famous and influential stories about samurai from the Edo period.
Lord Asano was a powerful Daimyo who was ordered by the Shogun to entertain the guests of the Imperial family. The highest ranking master of protocol, Kira, was tasked with teaching Asan, among other things, the proper manners for this task. Master Asano and Kira quickly grew to dislike each other, with the master insulting his student at every opportunity. Unable to hold back any longer, Asano swung his sword at Kira, wounding him in the attack. This act led to Asan's ordered suicide (seppuku) and the confiscation of his property. On December 14, 1702, almost a year after Asan's death, 47 of Asan's men (now Ronin) descended on Kira Mansion to exact their revenge. After a fierce battle, the Ronin demanded that Kira commit seppuku for his transgressions against their former master. When he refused, they executed him. For their actions, the Ronins were themselves sentenced to death by seppuku. They were buried together at Sengakuji, a true testament to the loyalty of the samurai.
