This authentic reproduction of a Roman officer's helmet with cheek hinges is made of 1.2 mm thick polished steel and richly decorated with brass fittings. The interior is not padded, but the delivery includes a padded cotton cap that makes the helmet fully wearable. In addition, small rings are placed on the inside of the cheek panels for easy attachment of a chinstrap (not included).
The two-tone black-and-white crista, believed to have been reserved for Roman soldiers with special command within a cohort (such as commanders below centurion), was made from natural horsehair. Also included is a brass crest holder for proper fit on the helmet.
This Roman helmet (also called galea or cassis) is an exact replica of the mid-1st century AD Imperial Gallic "G" Weisenau helmet found in the Rhine River in Mainz-Weisenau, Germany. The well-preserved iron and bronze artifact is on display for people to admire at the Museum im Andreasstift in Worms, Germany. Typical features for this particular type of helmet were (among other things) a sloping neck guard, distinctive eyebrows, front reinforcement and decorative circular ridges/rosettes.
