Description

Mantis Katana "praying mantis katana"

The praying mantis is a symbol of cunning and power in Japanese culture and is therefore a highly valued theme on samurai swords.

Built on the new Hanwei L6/Bainite Shobu Zukuri style blade with Bo-Hi, and featuring premium koshirae, the Praying Mantis Katana is highly desirable and functional.
The muted green silk ito and dark brown lacquered saya provide a handsome contrast to the dark copper and gold accents of tsuba, fuchi and kashira.

A stalking mantis awaits its next prey, reflecting the power and grace of this exquisite Katana.

Bainite is a high carbon steel structure that combines high strength with excellent flexibility and shock absorption characteristics. It has been known as an exemplary Katana blade component for several years, but its use has been limited to a few top master blacksmiths due to the difficulty in performing the demanding heat treatment processes required to produce the Bainite blade body combined with the very hard Martensite Yakiba (edge section) required for Katana blades .

Hanwei has now mastered this difficult process, using billets of L-6 tool steel (a very tough low alloy steel with a high carbon content) as the starting point for this katana. Blades are forged and shaped in the normal way, then carefully heat treated to achieve the required Bainite and Martensite structures before final polishing.
